Abstract

Teaching and maintenance of standards of nursing care are indeed a responsibility of the clinical instructor. If she is to do effective instruction of the student's clinical experience, she needs to know what factors are influencing the student's performance as a result of her presence.

The significance of the student's reactions to various educational experiences has been receiving increasing recognition during the last several years. This study was conducted to identify factors from nursing students' opinions concerning what clinical instructors do that influence effective student performance. These factors have been outlined for use in planning more effective clinical instructions.

The descriptive survey method of research, using a questionnaire and critical incident from, was used for this study. Eighty students enrolled in a selected school of nursing receiving the forms and completed them.

Data were classified under the following four main areas: (A) Assistance at the bedside; (B) Observations of daily nursing performance; (C) Conferences to plan nursing care for daily assignments; and (D) Discussions regarding problems when giving nursing care.

The responses received in each area were divided into categories. Three major categories were formulated under each area discussed. From the analysis of student responses a list of factors was outlined under each major category.

The most frequently occurring comments referred to the manner in which the student was observed and assisted and the relationship between the clinical instructor and the student. It was concluded as a result of this study that there is a general opinion among students of nursing concerning what clinical instructor does that influences effective student performance.

From the opinions received as a result of this study a check list of items was formulated. The items on the list are qualities which students desire a clinical instructor to possess and incorporate into her instruction if she is to assist the student in performing more effectively.

The check list may be used by the instructor as a means of self-evaluation of her own personal qualities, or by the student to evaluate clinical instructors.
