Description

Dr. George M. Austin was the founding editor and for many years, the editor-in-chief, for the scholarly journal Neurological Research. This is the cover of the inaugural issue, published in 1979. The journal issue is available at the Loma Linda University Del E Webb Memorial Library as part of the George M. Austin Neurology Reasearch Collection in the Department of Archives and Special Collections.

“This issue of Neurological Research marks the establishment of a new interdisciplinary, scientific journal devoted to research on the nervous system. To the greatest possible extent, it will foster a quantitative approach. The journal has been fortunate in gathering an outstanding international group for its editorial board, whose research qualifications are well known in their respective fields. It’s aims are to enable rapid publication of articles that represent a broad approach to the understanding of brain and spinal cord function under normal and pathological Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology, biochemistry, Neuropathology, and Neuropharmacology. Theoretical and practical aspects of the fields of research psychology, bioengineering, and biophysics, as they apply to the nervous system, will be encouraged, as well as biomathematical models. The journal urges bright and innovative ideas for the coordinated investigation of clinical problems in neurology and neurological surgery. But whether or not the approach is clinical is immaterial. The basic science of today is the background knowledge of the physician of tomorrow. Help for neurological disease in mankind is the goal”. George M. Austin, M. D. Editor-in-Chief 1979
