Abstract

In this study a curriculum is proposed for the Puerto Cabezas Hospital School of Nursing in Nicaragua which is built upon the requirements of the National School of Nursing and the studymaker's findings about the needs of the people in Nicaragua.

Study was made of available material concerned with cultural, geographical, and environmental background of the people of Nicaragua as it relates to their health condition. Investigation was made on the status and development of nursing and nursing education. Information was received through unpublished material, correspondence, and interviews with those who had been directly associated with health conditions and nursing in Nicaragua and the Puerto Cabezas Hospital.

A review was made of curriculum development. The principles of curriculum development, as stated by Smith, Stanley and Shores, were applied to the development of the proposed curriculum in this study.

It was found that the majority of the Nicaraguan people show very little interest in improving personal or community environmental conditions. A major problem in Nicaragua is maintenance of safe water supply and sanitary living conditions.

Education in Nicaragua is advancing slowly. Nicaragua is a sparsely populated country and communications are poor. There is a lack of equipment and teaching personnel. Organized nursing and nursing education is a recent development.

A small school of nursing is conducted in connection with the Puerto Cabezas Hospital which serves a primitive area with no other medical facilities. It is poorly equipped and lacks suitable accommodations for a school of nursing. The school has lacked educational leadership much of the time.

It is hoped that the curriculum proposed in this study will serve as a guide in the development of an educational program at the Puerto Cabezas Hospital School of Nursing in Nicaragua that will meet the needs of students as they prepare to nurse the people of Nicaragua.
