Abstract
The Bella Vista Hospital has had problems of staffing since it opened. Nurse shortages have been typical of all insular hospitals. There have been no national Seventh-day Adventist nurses available and no school where they could receive nursing education. The question has been raised whether it would be feasible to establish a school of nursing in connection with the hospital. This would give opportunity for Seventh-day Adventist young people who seek nursing education and would help prepare nurses to staff the hospital.
Through a survey of the Seventh-day Adventist church and youth membership in the Inter-American Division, it was found that there are more than nine thousand Spanish-speaking young people in the eastern portion of the Division. These are the youth from whom the hospital would draw students.
Recent literature and insular nursing laws were surveyed to find current recommendations for hospital schools. The hospital cannot meet these requirements now, but efforts are being made to reach them. The areas which need to be increased are given briefly.
The census and patronage, while barely meeting recommendations in 1957, will need to be increased in view of an expected increase of twenty-five in both in 1958. Obstetrical, pediatric, and psychiatric nursing must be found in community agencies unless the hospital patronage increases sufficiently in these areas. These experiences are available on the island as well as that of public health nursing.
Teaching facilities are lacking for science subjects, but there is interest in using those of the local university. Nursing supervision and teaching personnel will have to be increased to a minimum of seventeen before operating a school. The student residence, upon completion of the addition, will meet the needs. Adequate funds to operate a school are not available, so some source of funds will need to be found.
