Abstract

In order to investigate the characteristics of the facial complex of the Mexican and to compare them with the Caucasian, a sample of 40 subjects, 31 males and nine females, of Latin American origin from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, with a mean age of 16.6 years, were selected for this study. The criteria for selection were visual and only individuals with clinical normal, Angle Class I occlusion were chosen.

Lateral head Roentgenograms were obtained and cephalometric evaluation of the Skeletal and Dental Pattern was carried out using the Ricketts, Steiner, and Tweed Analyses.

The mean values for the Mexican were compared with the mean values established for Caucasians by Ricketts, Steiner, and Tweed. The comparison was subjected to statistical analysis using the Student "t" Test to determine the level of significance. The results obtained revealed statistically significant differences between the Mexican and Caucasian, and a set of suggested norms has been established for the Denture-Skeletal Pattern of the Mexican to be used as a basis for comparison studies with other ethnic groups.

From the data the following conclusions were drawn:

  1. The Mexican group had a slightly protrusive dental pattern when compared to the Caucasian.
  2. The skeletal pattern revealed a tendency toward prognatism of the maxilla and mandible with a short anterior cranial base.
  3. It was possible to have a clinically acceptable occlusion and harmonious facial profile; however, cephalometric values exhibited a protrusive relationship.
  4. Variations between ethnic groups could be identified by adequate cephalometric analysis and might possibly assist in ethnic identification.
  5. It appears evident from the data that in the Mexican, one should consider four bicuspid extraction therapy less frequently because of the tendency toward bimaxillary protrusion.
