Abstract

The gross structure and the neural arrangements in the optic lamina of crab Hemigrapsus nudus have been studied by light microscopy Golgi techniques and by electron microscopy. The lamina from distal to proximal is composed of a distinct cell layer, a fibular synaptic region, the plexiform layer, a spares cell layer, and the first optic chiasma. Golgi preparation of the lamina reveal four types of cells contributing to the lamina synaptic layer. Retinula cell axons and terminations, monopolar neurons with perikarya in the distal cell layer, tangential cells, neurons whose primary process enters from the chiasma with secondary processes branching in a horizontal direction and horizontal to the columnar or cartridge arrangement of the lamina. The majority of the retinular fibers terminate in the plexiform layer. One receptor terminates in the medulla externa, Monopolar neurons are categorized into five types, M 1-5, based on their arborization pattern and location, Golgi impregnation shows 3 types of tangential cells, evenly spaced throughout the plexiform layers with arborization diameter sufficient to provide overlap. Electromicroscopic data shows the cartridge structures to be rectangular in shape with receptor terminals rigidly regimented in the distal plexiform layer (DPL) and more loosely organized in the proximal plexiform layer (PPL).
