Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the detail reproduction, gypsum compatibility and linear dimensional change of three recently introduced irreversible hydrocolloid (alginate) alternatives. The materials that were tested are Position Penta Quick® (3M ESPE™), Silgimix® (Sultan Dental) and Alginot® (Kerr™). These materials were tested in accordance with ANSI/ADA Specification No. 18 for Alginate Impression Materials and No. 19 for Dental Elastomeric Impression materials. The irreversible hydrocolloid impression material Jeltrate Plus antimicrobial® (Dentsply Caulk™) served as the control.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ADA specification die was used to undertake the testing of the new materials. The parameters of detail reproduction, gypsum compatibility and linear dimensional change were tested in accordance with the ADA specifications. Further, following collation of the results a cost-benefit analysis was performed. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: For the tested parameters data was first analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis rank test. Further analysis between the impression materials was investigated using the Mann-Whitney U-test. OUTCOME: It was found that the new materials exhibited more favorable physical properties than traditional irreversible hydrocolloid impression materials in the parameters that were tested. This outcome is related to the fact that these materials are based on addition polymerized silicones. A significant finding was the incompatibility between the control material (Jeltrate Plus antimicrobial®) and Microstone® and in particular surface changes that were noted with time. Further testing is indicated to investigate this and to establish the clinical performance of these new materials.
