Abstract
Surgical orthodontics presents a challenge to the oral surgeon. By the nature of the oral surgeon's training and discipline he should be the one best qualified to treat the surgical aspect of the surgical orthodontic case. The establishment of a proper diagnosis and means of communication between the oral surgeon and orthodontist are essential in achieving a good final result for the surgically treated case. Fortunately, a scientific method of diagnosis is available that can provide both specialties with a common language. Computerized cephalometric analysis can provide the diagnosis and link of communication for the discussion of goals and treatment.
In this paper the Rocky Mountain Data Systems method of computerized cephalometric analysis (based on the modified Ricketts' analysis) is presented as it relates to surgical orthodontics. The oral surgeon needs a method of cephalometric analysis that is relatively straight forward and yet encompassing enough to provide a reliable diagnosis of facial deformities. The RMDS (Rocky Mountain Data Systems) method does that precisely.
This paper is designed to function as a guide for the oral surgeon to understand the use the cephalometric analysis in the diagnosis of facial deformities. Landmark points and planes are identified by definition and diagram. A problem analysis is presented in accessing two dimensions, horizontal problems and vertical problems. Both in chart form and diagrammatically are stated the objectives to he achieved in the horizontal and vertical planes. Then, the causes of deviations from the stated objectives are stated.
The majority of surgically correctable common facial deformities are grouped under five categories, namely, mandibular protrusion (Cl. 3), mandibular retrusion (Cl. 2), maxillary protrusion, maxillary retrusion, and bimaxillary protrusion. A cephalometric example in each type is presented.
With a reasonable amount of effort and the use of this manual, the oral surgeon should be able to obtain a scientific and accurate diagnosis of facial deformities.
