Abstract
In this study a survey was made of the attitudes of Indonesian Seventh-day Adventists toward nursing. This was done for the purpose of discovering why there is a shortage of women applicants to the Seventh-day Adventist nursing school in Bandung, Java. The study was accomplished through the use of questionnaires administered to four selected groups in two geographic areas of Indonesia, and revealed attitudes of two adult groups and two student group. One hundred and twenty-one persons responded to the questionnaires.
The survey indicated that Indonesian Seventh-day Adventists seem to be highly enthusiastic about nursing and believe it is a good profession for their women. The shortage of women applicants to the school of nursing exists because there is a low ratio of girls to boys studying in the Seventh-day Adventist middle schools, from which nursing applicants are chosen.
The problem of securing more women for nursing could be partially solved by extending student recruitment beyond the Seventh-day Adventist middle schools to Seventh-day Adventist young people who have not studied in denominational schools, A long-range type of student recruitment should be planned, in which nursing is presented to the Seventh-day Adventist church school children as a profession especially suitable for young women.
