Abstract
A comparative cephalometric study was made of nineteen cases, fourteen of which were patients under treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Loma Linda University. The remainder were individuals considered to have normal occlusions.
The review of the literature emphasized the plethora of analyses and the fact that cephalometry is a tool that must be mastered if the orthodontist is to give the best service. Thus the need for a study to compare the methods of analyzing the cephalograph. A study was made to compare two main methods of analysis and to determine whether or not the information obtained from each would concur.
The Sassouni analysis, representing the proportional school of thought, and the Steiner-Holdaway analysis, representing the angular linear school of thought, were considered to be most representative of each. Therefore, this study was limited to a comparison of these analyses.
Each of the nineteen cases was traced for analysis by the two methods selected. Measurements were then recorded and tabulated for comparison.
The results of the comparisons were placed on scattergrams which helped to visualize the tendencies and from which correlations of each measurement in a group were made. The Spearman rank-difference method was employed to correlate the observed differences between the two methods.
On the basis of this sampling there seemed to be the best agreement between the two analyses in the information given in the Class II, Division 1 cases.
There was disagreement between the two analyses in certain areas, but it was felt that should either analysis be used in toto the treatment philosophy would be a greater factor than the method of cephalometric analysis used in treatment planning.
