Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of the Newtom 3G™ in determining the angulation of the articular eminence. The benefits of conducting this study were to provide additional uses for the standard records that are taken for the purposes of orthodontic treatment, as well as evaluate the Newtom 3G™ for accuracy in measuring the anatomy of the glenoid fossa. This study required 20 participants that volunteered to allow their records to be used. Records evaluated were the Newtom 3G™, impressions, and wax check bite registrations. The wax record was taken using the 'forced bite' technique to register the angle of the articular eminence. This allowed the condyles to be seated in the superior position using the patient's own musculature. The wax check bite was used to determine the condylar settings on the SAM II articulator. The angle of the articular eminence was measured from the Newtom 3G™ image and the two measurements compared. For a small sample, a Cadiax recording was taken by a senior resident in the Graduate Prosthodontics Department. All measurements were compared using Cohen's Kappa Statistic and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient to determine inter-rater agreement and compare the three different methods of registering the articular eminence. The results showed 'substantial' correlation between the three Raters and 'moderate' correlation between the Newtom 3™ and Check Bite methods at the α = .05 nominal level. There was also 'substantial' correlation between the Newtom 3G™ and Cadiax method at the α = .1 nominal level for the left side of the jaw. Conclusions were that the method of measuring the articular eminence using the Newtom 3G™ was reproducible, however more study with a larger sample size would be necessary to draw conclusions about the comparisons between the three different methods.
