Abstract

The study compared the retentive bond strength of Ketac-Cem with Ultra Bond-Lok and a 3M Experimental glass ionomer cement at 1 hour and 24 hours using laser and common light cure techniques. The sample consisted of one hundred twenty sound extracted human molars divided into 5 groups: Ketac-Cem (self-cure), Ultra Band-Lok (light-cure), Ultra Band-Lok (laser cure), 3M Experimental (light-cure) and 3M Experimental (laser cure). Stainless steel orthodontic bands with buccal and lingual cleats were cemented as per manufacturer's instructions for each of the test samples. The samples were placed in water until ready for testing. The shear bond strength of each sample was determined with an Instron Universal Testing Machine. The following results were found: (1) At 1 hour Ketac-Cem, 3M light cure, and Ultra Band-Lok light cure were the strongest, however, they were not statistically different. Ultra Band-Lok laser cure and 3M laser cure were the weakest. At 24 hours Ketac-Cem was the strongest followed by Ultra Band-Lok light cure, 3M light cure, Ultra Band-Lok laser cure, and 3M laser cure, respectively. (2) Time was found to be significant for every product, except 3M light cure, from 1 hour to 24 hours. The 3M product got weaker with time, (3) The chemically polymerized specimens produced the strongest bond strengths, then light cure, and laser cure produced the weakest bond strengths. Under the conditions of this study, polymerization of glass ionomer cements with lasers for orthodontic bands is contraindicated.
