Abstract
NewTom 3G™ scout images have the general appearance of traditional lateral cephalometric radiographs. The purpose of this research was to determine if Ricketts and Steiner analyses could be accomplished on NewTom 3G™ scout images.
This was a retrospective study comparing the use of NewTom 3G™ scans in DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) format to scout images from 25 consecutive patients of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics, three of these patients did not meet the inclusion criteria. The DICOM images were used to create controls. The controls and scout images were digitized using QuickCeph™. The measurements from the scout images were then compared to those of the controls.
The data showed that there were statistically significant inter-rater differences (p < .05) in the Ricketts (15 of 17 measurements) and Steiner (7/10 measurements) analyses. There were no statistically significant differences noted when comparing raters with themselves. When comparing the mean measurements from the scout images with the controls, 3 of the 17 measurements in the Ricketts analysis were statistically significantly different (Cranial Deflection, Maxillary Depth and Facial Depth). There were no statistically significant differences between the scout images and the control in the Steiner analysis.
These results demonstrate that, although it appears possible for one to reproduce their own measurements consistently, when comparing measurements obtained from NewTom 3G™ scout views, different orthodontists obtain different measurements from the same image in both Ricketts and Steiner analyses. Also, with exception of the Cranial Depth, Maxillary Depth and Facial Depth, the results show that the scout views from the NewTom 3G™ are dimensionally equivalent to those from NewTom 3G™ DICOM images.
As a group, though, the raters found it difficult to visually identify various landmarks on the NewTom 3G™ scout images, and made educated guesses as to where those landmarks should be digitized. Due to the difficulty in visualizing landmarks, it does not appear to be possible to accurately and consistently obtain reliable results from Ricketts or Steiner Analyses performed NewTom 3G™ scout images.
