Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if Rickett's posterio-anterior (P/A) cephalogram measurements could be obtained from Cone Beam Computerized Tomographic (CBCT) images taken on the NewTom QR-DVT 9000™.

Fifteen frontal cephalometric radiographs were chosen for good image quality, with no regard for patient age or gender. Each cephalogram was traced three times by the same operator using ZeroBase™ software. Landmarks were located and measured according to the Rickett's frontal analysis technique. Methods were devised for obtaining analogous measurements using CBCT images on the same group of patients.

Measurements obtained using CBCT correlated well with those obtained using the P/A cephalogram, with the exception of maxillo-mandibular widths. The coefficients of variation (R2) values ranged from 0.817 to 0.685. Reproducibility of measurements was excellent with all but one of the intraclass correlation coefficients exceeding 0.858. Canine width and molar width were measured on plaster study models and were compared to measurements that were made using the two radiographic methods. Canine width measured on both CBCT and the P/A cephalogram demonstrated no significant difference with the canine width measured on the plaster study models at the significance level α = .05% (p = .495 & .741, respectively). The molar width also displayed no significant difference when measured on the CBCT and the study models. However, the P/A cephalogram molar width results were significantly different (p = .286 & .040, respectively).

CBCT was shown to be capable of yielding much of the information traditionally gleaned from the Rickett's analysis of a P/A cephalogram, and appeared adequate for use in the analysis of transverse skeletal and dental relationships.
