Abstract
Most existing cephalometric analyses are based on norms for the Caucasian population. Therefore, they cannot be properly applied for Mexican or Hispanic patients. Ethnic variations in the normal positions of the maxilla and mandible influence and alter the diagnosis and treatment plan for each of the different type of malocclusions. Previous studies have addressed the difference between the Caucasian norms and the Hispanic norms, this indicates the variety of their skeletal, dental and facial features.
It is the purpose of this study to establish specific cephalometric standards for the native Mexican group, using the Steiner and Ricketts analyses along with the Arnett Facial Analysis.
One hundred cephalograms, 50 males and 50 females, were selected from 856 cephalograms of Mexican patients from a private orthodontic practice in Mexico City. The x-rays were collected and sent to Loma Linda University. The criteria for selection of these patients were as follow: un-treated, Class I molar and cuspid, full permanent dentition, no more than 3 mm of arch length discrepancy and normal overbite and overjet. Patients were non-growing females ages 14 to 25 and males ages 18 to 35, with at least four generations of family background born in central and southern Mexico.
From this group of 100 cephalograms, another subset of 30 patients (11 males and 19 females) with pleasant harmonious faces and well balanced profiles was selected so that the lip thickness as well as the rest of the skeletal, facial and dental tissues could be traced and measured with the Arnett Facial Analysis. The lateral cephalometric x-rays from 100 patients were traced first by hand and then using the Quick Ceph Image Pro™.
The development of these cephalometric and esthetic norms for the Mexican population will aid the orthodontist in creating the best diagnosis and treatment plan for the significant and growing population of Hispanics around the world.
