Abstract

Statement of the Problem: the purpose of this study was to find out the current faculty-student ratio in the medical-surgical area in collegiate school of nursing which were fully accredited by the National League for Nursing and the number of students with which instructors felt comfortable in their clinical instructions.

Method: the descriptive survey method with a questionnaire was used to collect data from the study. Eighty-six instructors returned the questionnaire.

Summary of Findings: most instructors were responsible for teaching more than one class level of students and were teaching in a hospital without segregated service. Forty-eight received no assistance from nursing service personnel in their teaching.

The average number of hours spent weekly in class and laboratory was twenty-six hours. The majority of instructors reported that this time was consistent throughout the years.

Some of the instructors gave assistance to other instructors and the average amount of time given weekly was six hours. Thirty instructors reported that they received assistance from other instructors.

The maximum average number of students for classroom instruction was twenty-five; the minimum was fifteen students. The maximum average number of students for laboratory instruction was eight; the minimum average was five students. Seventy-nine of the instructors said they were comfortable with the size group assigned to them in the classroom. Seventy per cent stated they felt comfortable with the group assigned to the laboratory and did not wish for a change in the size of the groups assigned to them.
