Abstract

The problem of this study was to develop an evaluation form to measure the differentiation in quality of nursing care given by professional staff nurses. It was hoped that the evaluation form could be used by administrators of nursing service as a basis for giving pay increases based on nursing performance.

A review of nursing literature did not reveal the existence of an evaluation form based on verifiable data of performance upon which an objective evaluation could be made.

The critical incident technique was used to gather the data for the study. The respondents were nursing supervisory personnel employed in ten teaching hospitals. From these respondents 278 critical incidents of effective and ineffective nursing performance were obtained.

There were 292 critical behaviors abstracted from the critical incidents. The critical behaviors were classified into nine areas and thirty-eight sub-areas. The evaluation form was developed from statements of effective and ineffective behaviors for each sub-area. A set of directions for using the evaluation form was developed.

A trial study of the evaluation form was conducted in three hospitals. Some changes were made in the format of the evaluation form as a result of the trial study.
