Abstract
The accuracy of the computer video imaging treatment prediction was investigated using Quick Ceph Image.™ Thirty one surgical mandibular advancement/genioplasty orthognathic cases were examined to determine if the soft tissue profile prediction was representative of the actual result. All patients were over the age of 18. Lateral cephalographs and slides were taken immediately pre-surgically, and six months post-surgically. The slides were duplicated into 4X6 photographs. The cephalographs were digitized and the photographs captured by video on the Quick Ceph Image software program. A line drawing and computer video image treatment prediction were generated using the actual surgical change that had occurred. Measurements were calculated by the computer program and the clinical acceptability determined independently by an orthodontist and an oral surgeon. The following results were obtained: 1) Examiner's clinical assessments were not significantly different. 2) Surgical groups were not significantly different. 3) Line drawing predictions were not significantly different from the actual postsurgical results at 16 of the 19 areas measured. 4) Line drawing predictions were clinically acceptable 80% of the time or more at all five areas evaluated. 5) Computer video imaging predictions were clinically acceptable 75% of the time or more at the upper lip, lower lip, and submental area. 6) Computer video imaging predictions were clinically acceptable less than 60% of the time at the labiomental fold, and chin. The Quick Ceph Image software program was determined to be clinically acceptable in the majority of the cases when looking at the overall soft tissue profile prediction.
With the improvements in the method of tracing the soft tissue profile in the new version of Quick Ceph Image, as well as an understanding by the clinician that head posture and technique are extremely important. Quick Ceph Image should provide accurate and reliable projections for both the patient and practitioner.
