Abstract

The author presents a detailed review of the methods used in the management of chronic otitis media. The advances made in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition during the past twenty-five centuries are listed. Medical and surgical procedures to eliminate chronic otitis media are reviewed.

The author presents the results of his research studies which have helped to demonstrate a more effective way of preventing recurrent infections of the respiratory system and the ears.

A research project using rabbits has shown that bioflavonoids, Heparin, and rage prevent the inflammatory reaction incidental to the Schwartzman's phenomenon, whereas chilling the rabbit produced the inflammatory reaction on the sensitized belly without the need of the stimulating injection of bacterial filtrate in the ear vein. From these studies the author has developed the theory that many common colds are due to psycho-allergic factors. This type of common cold, which often starts within 8 to 12 hours after a chill or autonomic upset, is due to the previously sensitized tissues in the nose, throat, and ears becoming inflamed and thus permitting the ever-present opportunist bacteria and viruses to take over and cause a secondary infection.

A review of the present status of common cold research using various filterable viruses is given. Statistics on 200 of the author's patients suffering from chronic otitis media are given. Many of these had spontaneous closure of their ear drums when they followed the author's treatment program.

Infection was controlled in ninety-five per cent of the patients reviewed.
