Abstract

This quality improvement project evaluated the impact of a psychiatric-specific handoff educational intervention in pre-licensure nursing students’, their perceptions of handoff competency, communication quality, and teamwork effectiveness. Using the PSYCH mnemonic tool, a structured educational session was provided to  students during their psychiatric nursing course. Pre- and post-intervention surveys included the Nursing Handoff Competency Scale, Handover Evaluation Scale, and TeamSTEPPS communication items. Post-intervention findings were associated with more favorable student perceptions across multiple communication and handoff competency domains. Results support integrating psychiatric-specific handoff education for pre-licensure nursing curricula can strengthen communication preparedness to promote patient safety in psychiatric settings.
