Motivators and Barriers to Adoption of Plant-based Meat & Dairy Alternatives– A Comparison of a Blue Zone and Disadvantaged Communities

Collective Title

Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics Research Reports 2023

Abstract

Introduction:

Blue Zones are geographical locations where there are low rates of chronic disease diagnosis, risks and mortalities, and people living in these communities live longer than average life spans. Individuals living in the Blue Zone of Loma Linda eat predominantly plant-based diets that incorporate meat and dairy alternatives. These products have been shown to provide health, environmental and affordability benefits. With respect to health, a plant-based diet is effective at preventing, treating and reversing diseases, including heart disease which is the number one killer in the US. In recent years, plant-based diets have gained a wide acceptance beyond the Blue Zone of Loma Linda, as consumers have been careful to make more health-conscious food choices. However, despite the benefits, not everyone is sold on plant-based products. Further, it is well documented that traditionally disadvantaged communities carry a higher burden of disease which in part, may be due in part to low intake of meat and dairy alternatives.
