Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate pocket reduction following gingival curettage. The effects of temporary pressure packing, inflammation, oral hygiene, pocket depth, age and sex of the patient were evaluated.

Three hundred twenty-eight periodontal pockets were studied in forty-one adult patients selected with interdental lesions ranging from 3.0 - 7.5 mm. in depth. Pocket depth and gingival height were measured preoperatively, one month postoperatively and two months postoperatively. The mean change in pocket depth and gingival height was calculated and statistical significance was determined for all measurements.

The results show that after a two-month postoperative evaluation following gingival curettage the mean reduction in pocket depth was 1.10 mm. in 328 pockets with an initial mean depth of 3.90 mm. A decrease of gingival height accounted for 0.35 mm. of this pocket reduction while the remaining 0.75 mm. was attributed to a gain of attachment. Dividing the test sample for the purpose of analysis, the following observations were made: no significant difference was found between the group receiving temporary pressure packing and the non-packed group; the group with the least amount of apparent inflammation demonstrated the most reduction of pocket depth and gingival height; the group with the best oral hygiene responded with the greatest reduction in pocket depth and gingival height; the deep lesions exhibited a greater reduction in pocket depth and a greater gain of attachment than the shallow lesions.
