Abstract

The "Smiles of the Year" winners and patients treated at Loma Linda University by the extraction or non-extraction approach were compared by linear and angular variables of skeletal, dental and soft tissue components. These findings were analyzed statistically to determine significant differences in the profile and detect the relationship between the integument and hard structures.

The following conclusions were drawn from this investigation to reflect the trend of treatment at Loma Linda University.

  1. After treatment the patients had less skeletal convexity, but were more convexity than established standards.
  2. The incisors of the patients treated by the extraction approach were less procumbent and more upright than those treated without the extraction of teeth, or individuals with excellent occlusions.
  3. The forward movement of the lower incisors may not reveal itself in lower lip protrusion when related to the esthetic plane.
  4. Nasal growth appeared to significantly effect the relation of the lips to the esthetic plane.
  5. The patients in this study were not treated to a dished in or full profile when compared to established standards and the "Smiles of the Year" winners.
  6. In general the non-extraction cases showed closer similarity to the "Smiles of the Year" group than did the extraction cases.
  7. Measurement of facial growth may aid the explanation of the results which occur in the treatment of adolescents.
