Abstract

This experimental study tested the effect of a teaching program on success of a group of mothers desiring to breast feed their babies. It was hypothesized that mothers receiving specific instructions on the physiology of lactation and the proper sucking technique would have greater success than mothers not so instructed.

To be categorized as successful the mothers had to have an adequate supply of milk and had to express satisfaction with breast feeding. Criteria for adequacy of milk supply consisted of weight gain of the infant within accepted norms without use of supplementary formula.

Twenty breast feeding mothers who delivered at the San Bernardino County Hospital participated in the study. The selected mothers had not breast fed previously, their physicians indicated no contradiction for breast feeding, and they lived within 20 miles of the Hospital.

The researcher visited ten mothers in the study group for a period of four weeks. These home visits lasted approximately 45 minutes. The visits included teaching the mother the process of lactation and proper sucking technique. The ten mothers in the control group were visited in the hospital to obtain permission for a home visit which was made at the end of four weeks to obtain data.

A chi square test for significance applied to the data from the two groups of mothers showed significance at the 0.01 level indicating that a teaching program with breast feeding mothers promotes success.
