Abstract

The Hydrodent toothbrush was compared to conventional toothbrush (Lactona # 19) in its effectiveness on removing the plaque, eliminating the pocket depth, and improving the gingival tissue condition.

Forty six male and female subjects with the age range of 18 to 50 years old participated in a 5 month study with 4 week intervals. Each subject received a Hydrodent brush of soft, medium, and hard textures and a conventional toothbrush. The toothbrushes were given randomly and the subject served as his own control.

Clinical and histological evaluations were made after the use of each toothbrush. The clinical evaluation showed some degree of superiority of Hydrodent toothbrush in plaque removal. Plaque tended to decrease on the second visit and increased again on the following visits. None of the brushes had any direct effect on pocket elimination; however, the plaque scores and the pocket depth were always proportional. The Hydrodent brush greatest effect was on the male and adult population with minor change in the female and the young adult population.

Keratin, collagen density, degree of inflammation, and blood vessel proliferation showed some alteration in the study. In general, the inflammatory signs decreased at the fifth (last) visit. None of the brushes presented any superiority upon tissue condition.

Both clinical and histological results indicate that bristle texture per se does not have any influence upon plaque removal, pocket elimination, and gingival tissue condition.
