Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate any possible beneficial effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (Ω-3 PUFAs) as a dietary supplement when incorporated into the diet of rats that had periodontitis induced via a ligature model.

Materials and Methods: 20 male rats (Sprague Dawley) were divided into 2 groups as following: 1) Control group with ligature-induced periodontitis and no Ω-3 PUFA in the diet; and 2) Test group with ligature-induced periodontitis and Ω-3 PUFA introduced in the diet. The ligature was placed around the mandibular first molars in the gingiva sulcus for a period of 15 days on both groups. The control group was given regular chow with no supplementation in their diet. However, the test group was provided with a custom fed diet of Ω-3 PUFA chow given every day for a period of 15 days. Both groups of animals were euthanized at day 15, and jaws containing the first molar, epithelial tissue, and alveolar bone crest were subjected to histologic analyses.

Results: The usage of Ω-3 PUFA in this animal-model study showed no statistically significant lower rate of alveolar bone loss (P<0.05) when compared to animals fed a regular chow. However, the effects of Ω-3 PUFA are evident in the reduction of alveolar bone loss in the test group when compared to the control group. The data were analyzed with the independent sample t-test.

Discussion: These findings reveal that diets incorporated with an Ω-3 PUFA diet can possibly decrease the amount of alveolar bone loss in a ligature induced periodontitis induced animal model. However, more studies are needed with a larger animal sample size.
