Teaching prevention before disease management: a sustained curriculum innovation in pre-licensure nursing education
Collective Title
School of Nursing Conference Presentations
Abstract
Chronic noncommunicable diseases are the leading causes of death worldwide, yet many are preventable or reversible through lifestyle change (Dean et al., 2014). Although nurses are well-positioned to support health behavior change, pre-licensure nursing education remains largely didactic, disease-focused, and introduced late in the curriculum (Kemppainen et al., 2013; Shea et al., 2021). To align with national priorities, we redesigned a pre-licensure health promotion course around lifestyle medicine and experiential teaching strategies. This presentation describes the process and sustained implementation results.
