Collective Title

Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics Research Reports 2023

Abstract

Introduction: Two common problems that exist in the adult population in the United States are vitamin D deficiency and coronary heart disease (CHD). According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014, 23.3% of the US population are at risk of vitamin D inadequacy (serum 25(OH)D of 30-49 nmol/L) and vitamin D deficiency (serum 25(OH)D lower than 30 nmol/L). Also, according to Centers for Disease Control data in 2015-2018, 11.4% of the US adult population had high Total Cholesterol (TC) levels, and 17.2% of the US adult populations had low High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) levels.TC:HDL ratio is used to determine risk for developing CHD. High TC:HDL ratio is associated with higher risk of developing CHD. According to Healthline, the desirable TC:HDL ratio is ≤ 5 for men and ≤ 4 for women.
